The American Pit Bull Terrier Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (July, 2000)
Author: Joe Stahlkuppe
Average review score:

Don't judge this wonderful breed of dog!
Even though I knew that this dog wasn't as "mean and aggressive" as people made it seem, this book was extremely interesting and i learned many new facts. Besides being a great care-guide, it explains the breed's character and history.Everything that you would ever want to know about the American Pit Bull Terrier can be found in this book, accuratly portrayed. The book is clear on how to prevent accidental fights and that this great dog should only be owned by responsible people. Hopefully the APBT will one day gain the respect they deserve and people will know the truth about them.

A wonderful book for APBT owners and fans!
As an owner of a 90+ pound APBT, I have tried to read all the books and articles I could find on the subject of pit bulls. This is BY FAR the best book I have found. Many writers of such books are extremely one sided, either portaying the dogs a vicious killers or as baby dolls. Mr. Stahlkuppe very fairly shows the good points of these dogs, as well as the bad. This book should be required reading for all prospective pit bull owners.

Good book for anyone that wants truth about this great breed
For someone who wants to get an American Pit Bull Terrier should read this book. It talks about responsible ownership and how to socialize your puppy so that it will become a good canine citizen. Although it has a whole chapter about dog-fighting which I don't like, it uses that information to explain the temperament of the breed - which is not a vicious animal like everyone says. Ofcourse they don't like dogs, although some live with other dogs their whole life without any incidents. They love people and strangers and are not guard dogs - in fact they love people so much that they will let a stranger in your house, take everything including the pit bull. Some pit bull owners even get other dogs like Dobermans to protect their pit bull. It might sound strange but its true. Bad breeding, dog-fighters, and the media gave this breed a bad reputation. Before you buy a dog - read this book first. Pit bulls are only for very few people - only if you you are getting this dog as a pet, have lots of time to spend time with them socialize, and have time to love them then may be you should consider this breed.

Climbing Jacob's Ladder: One Man's Rediscovery of a Jewish Spiritual Tradition
Published in Digital by Broadway ()
Author: Alan Morinis
Average review score:

Intoduction to Mussar
I stumbled on this book when it was reviewed in the Religion section of the Houston Chronicle. Like Alan Morinis I am a secular person. Once I bought the book I couldn't put it down. Then I reread it and started to study it. I learned to do some of the exercises. I use The exercise with the elastic band whenever I am stuck in a line anywhere. It calms me down. (You'll have to get the book to learn it.)
I find this book to be an excellent introduction to Mussar. It is almost painless but it does require effort and concentration.

An Inspiring Journey
It's not often that one comes across a nonfiction book as smooth reading as "Climbing Jacob's Ladder." Alan Morinis has produced what might be called a spiritual autobiography, with a specific purpose, explained in the title as, "One Man's Discovery of a Jewish Spiritual Tradition." Underlying all is a searing honesty that is positively inspiring.
The tradition in question is Mussar, which has its roots in Eastern Europe before the Holocaust. This so decimated Mussar practitioners that Mussar did not gain prominence in the study of Judaism as a whole. So, for Alan Morinis, after much research, it was a "find". His description of it is so impelling that it is hard to put aside. As an autobiography, the character of the author as a secular Jew comes through very clearly in all its ramifications during his journey towards spiritual fulfilment.
Also central to the book's treatment of Mussar is the character of the person who ultimately became Morinis' teacher. Rabbi Yechiel Yitzchok Perr, living in New York to where the author travelled several times from Vancouver for study. Rabbi Perr, though orthodox himself teaches without imposing orthodoxy on the learner as the writer might have expected, since he found the subject grounded in orthodoxy.
However, Mussar is not only for studying, but for practising: its basic principles emanating from the soul of every practitioner, different as they are from every other practitioner.
I found the book positively exciting because of the honesty of expression about the author's feelings at every stage of the journey. The writing is imbued with a very human quality that draws the reader into the author's soul, which is the whole point of the exercise of Mussar: to develop the soul toward spiritual perfection as far as possible.
We are all different from each other with regard to the elements of our characters. Mussar calls these elements, "soul-traits". "We don't have a soul. We are a soul". Through the discipline of Mussar we are helped to improve these various soul-traits: for example, by working on our anger, impatience, etc. until we become more holy. Rabbi Perr side-steps a definition of holiness, saying that, "you'll know about holiness just from the experience."
There's a lot more to the book than can be described here, such as what the Mussar exercises consist of. Suffice it to say that the end result of the book is a beautiful document, the essence of it being the "soul-perspective", leading to the possibility of all who read it to face life with equanimity.

Climbing Jacob's Ladder
This is a wonderful book wrtten with courage, sensitivity and clarity.
The theme is a story of getting lost on life's journey and on finding a way back- no easy task in our North American culture of "materialism and self-centeredness".
Alan Morinis generously shares his "journey" which took him to the little known ancient Jewish spiritual practice called Musar.
At first through his reading and studying of obscure texts and eventually with the guidance of a wise and compassionate teacher, the author rediscovers his "true nature".
The book overflows with wisdom and ancient truths and the practices and techniques of Musar are clearly laid out at the end of each chapter.
Morinis wrestles with the question of whether one has to be a practicing Orthodox Jew to follow the path of Musar and concludes that one doesn't. In fact, I think that the path of Musar is open to all who genuinely thirst after truth and wisdom.
The author generously shares his "journey" and his discoveries in a way that enables the reader to begin an ancient practice that can be life transforming.

Dictionary of Mathematics Terms (Barron's Professional Guides)

Incredibly handy
One of the best pocket sized mathematics references I have found all around.

Concise, fluid easily readable reference for students
A great bridge between a sometimes confusing text presentation and conceptual understanding. I will recommend Barron's as a must for my Algebra 1,2 and Honors students. Barron's is a valuable supplement for any secondary or post secondary mathematics program, keep it by your side.

An EXTREMELY useful pocket sized reference for the sciences
I am a second year Math/Physics student in college and this book is an invaluable resource for just about any formula, trig. subsitution, integral/derivative identity, mathematical terminology or concept in general. If you've ever found yourself searching for some mathematical expression, or the meaning of some obscure symbol, chances are it's in this book. Breif, clear, and concise definitions along with simple, yet descriptive visual aids. A must for any undergraduate science student.

Economics (Barron's Business Review Series)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (February, 1993)
Author: Walter J. Wessels
Average review score:

Great book as a supplement or a refresher!
Having already obtained a B.S. in Economics, I was looking for a book to have a refresher before I start my masters degree. Boy did I ever pick the right book! This book is fantastic. It is easy to read, is very insightful, and has great question and answer sessions as you go through the chapters. It even has an entire chapter (ch. 2) on what most people find to be the most difficult part of economics, the graphs. It covers Macro, Micro, and even stems out into taxes and government, spilling over a bit into finance even. This is a great book and I would reccomend it for anyone who needs a good refresher or just some additional help.

Good resource
This book has come in handy with some of my business courses. When a text book is "foggy" on something this littly book has come through to clear up the subject in question. The only down side to this is that most classes are taught with a separation between micro and macro. This book is separated also, but I think it would be best to have to books instead of one, that way the authors could cover each area in more detail.

Good economics primer
This book, like the others I have read from the Business Review Series is top notch. It covers the topics presented in college level economics courses. It covers macroeconomics and microeconomics theories. Easily, this is one of the more readable texts on an otherwise dry subject.

The book targets both students and professionals who want to get a deeper understanding of economics. Recommended.

A Great Beginners Book
If you've never owned a ferret before or feel like you're not knowledgable enough with the fuzzies you have now, this is a great book. It covers all the basics one needs to know when caring for a ferret, or multiples. Including ferret proofing your home, basic training technics with multiple suggestions for different behavioral problems since no two ferrets are a like and will respond differently and many many other topics. I enjoyed this book and found it very informative since at the time I purchased it I felt I needed to learn more about my sweet little fuzzies and sure did! A great book.

Barron's A P Statistics: Advanced Placement Test in Statistics (Barrons A P Statistics: Advanced Placement Test in Statistics, 1998)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (March, 1998)
Author: Martin Sternstein
Average review score:

Great Review
This guide gave a very thorough review of every subject on the AP Test. Especially useful were the questions at the end of each section, which give you more practice mastering the subjects you have trouble with. Also helpful were the five practice tests at the end of the book, which give you more than enough preparation for the AP test. One drawback about the tests, though: They only contained 35 MC questions, while the real test contained 40. Overall, an excellent book.

Good Review for the AP Statistics Exam
This book really covers relevant materials. You will find out that the formulae in the book are very helpful when doing the multiple choice sections. The practice tests are a bit harder, but if you can get a good score on that, you'll have no problem of getting a 5 on the AP Exam.

Helped me get a 5!!
This book was recommended to me last year by my AP Stat teacher and I'm very glad I bought it. The questions in it do an excellent job of preparing for both the material and question type on the AP exam. I found the Barron's questions to be more difficult than the actual test!! Watch out for the short answers, though... the ones on the test seemed to come from left field.

Cliffs Quick Review Basic Math and Pre Algebra
Published in Paperback by Cliffs Notes (August, 1998)
Authors: Unk, Cliffs Notes, and Jerry Bobrow
Average review score:

really good
this book: 1. will help you solve 80% of the math the average person will encounter in their life, 2. [and if a parent] will allow you the math knowledge to allow you to help you to help your kids with their homework until they reach that age where they are sure that your to dumb and way to old to help them, anyway, 3. [if a student] only half listen to the 'really dull' math teacher and then learn it on your own - but it will really help if you listen and study on your own.

6th Grade Math Teacher Loves This Resource
I teach both average and honors math to typical 6th grade students. I use the Cliffs Quick Review for Basic Math and Pre-Algebra in my classroom and encourage my students to purchase a copy for themselves. I find it to be a usable source for self study and review. The language and examples are useful and simple for students and parents to understand.

I also have several other Cliffs Quick Review titles for my own children. My children use the Quick Reviews for Algebra I & II, Geometry, Chemistry, and Biology. I am so pleased with the format of these books that I will purchase any of the other titles relevant to high school and college study.

This is a great book
If you have a hard time in algebra or pre-algebra, you should buy this book. To get to perform the most odd looking problems it takes basic math and pre algebra, so i suggest this as a good book

Guinea Pigs: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals Series)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (August, 1998)
Authors: Katrin Behrend and Helgard Niewisch
Average review score:

This book tells a lot about how to take care of your g-pig
I like this book a lot because it helped me to learn how to take care of Gordy and Amy, my guinea pigs. You should buy this book it will teach you a lot!!!!

Help for the lost...
A very helpful guide for all owners of guinea pigs. What I like most of this book is the section on the guinea pig's body language. This is something that other guinea pig guide books do not have. Owners will learn from this chapter on how to communicate with their piggies better.

I have found that books from the "Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals Series" to be very helpful in terms of care of the pet for any pet owners.

A Special Book To Help Understand Guinea Pigs
I remember taking in Gweeker, a sweet mixed breed silver and white guinea pig who was being aboused by the other guinea pigs in her pen at the pet store. I suddenly realised I didn't know much how to care for her. One of the first books I bought was this one--and I still thumb through it frequently. That was nearly six years ago. The charts and the lists of good and bad foods for guinea pigs are PRICELESS. Also a bonus are clearly described signs of normal guinea pig behavior and abnormal signs, so you can immediately recognise when to take Piggy to the vet. There are some shortcomings--breeds are not clearly identified in the photos, breeds that are new here in the US are obviously not in there. Also, it is known now that red cedar is BAD bedding for guinea pigs--that fact is not mentioned. This is translated from the German (and is more enjoyable and informative a read than most guinea pig books written by native speakers of English). It does have a European viewpoint of taking care of guinea pigs, so take some advice like picking wild plants for Piggy to eat (too dangerous to do in the US) with a grain of salt. Overall, though, I think Gweeker and the rest of the piggies in my life are glad I bought this book.
